TRUST & SAFETY

The Hallway Promise
We believe every student deserves a space that is safe, real, and worth their time. That means we verify every user, take every report seriously, and do not tolerate behavior that makes others feel unsafe. No exceptions.
HOW VERIFICATION WORKS
Every person on Hallway has been verified as a student at a recognized Indian college or university. Here is how it works:
- You sign up using your official college email address (.edu, .ac.in, .edu.in, or other accepted domains)
- We send a one-time magic link to that email
- Clicking the link confirms you have access to that inbox — verifying your student status
- Non-student emails are rejected outright. No exceptions.
This means there are no anonymous outsiders on Hallway. Everyone you talk to is a verified student, just like you.
WHAT WE DO NOT ALLOW
Hallway has zero tolerance for the following:
- Sexual or explicit content — of any kind, at any time, including during video calls
- Harassment or threats — targeting any user based on anything they say, look like, or identify as
- Non-consensual recording — screenshotting, recording, or sharing another person's video or audio without their knowledge
- Hate speech — content that demeans or attacks people based on religion, caste, gender, sexuality, region, or any other identity
- Impersonation — pretending to be someone you are not
- Scams or spam — soliciting money, promoting products, or running any kind of scheme through the platform
- Illegal activity — anything that violates Indian law
Serious violations result in an immediate and permanent ban with no possibility of appeal. Illegal activity will be reported to the relevant authorities.
HOW TO REPORT SOMEONE
If someone makes you uncomfortable during a call, you can report them instantly:
- Tap the Report button during an active call
- Select the reason that best describes the violation
- Submit — we receive your report immediately
You can also end the call at any time by clicking the disconnect button. You will never be forced to stay in a conversation.
For reports that need more context or happen outside of an active call, email us at safety@hallwaychat.online.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A REPORT
Every report is taken seriously. Here is what happens when you report someone:
- Your report is received immediately and reviewed by our team
- The reported user's account is flagged for review
- Based on the nature of the violation, we take one of the following actions:
Minor violations — Warning issued. Repeated minor violations escalate to suspension.
Moderate violations — Temporary suspension from the platform.
Serious violations — Immediate permanent ban. No appeals, no second chances.
Illegal activity — Permanent ban and report filed with relevant authorities.
We do not share the outcome of individual reports with the reporter, but every report contributes to our understanding of user behavior and helps us keep the platform safe.
YOUR PRIVACY DURING CALLS
Hallway uses WebRTC for all video and audio communication. This means your calls are peer-to-peer — Hallway's servers do not sit in the middle of your call and cannot access what you say or show during it.
Your real name is never shown to the person you are matched with. They only see your display name, profile photo, college, and selected interests — information you chose to share during setup.
KEEPING YOURSELF SAFE
A few simple habits to stay safe on Hallway:
- Never share your personal phone number, home address, or social media handles during a call unless you are comfortable doing so
- If something feels off, disconnect and report. You do not owe anyone your time or attention.
- Do not meet anyone in person based solely on a Hallway conversation without taking proper precautions
- If you ever feel you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services (112 in India) first
